Heartland offers band, choir, art class and many creative events for convention competitions. Participation in Music is required for full time students in grades 6-8, and students may choose choir, band or both. Band class is required for 5th grade students. The arts are a wonderful opportunity for students to develop the creative side of their brains as they learn to read music, play instruments, harmonize singing parts or hone artistic skills. Below are the most common questions and general info to get your child started on the right track:
Getting Started
What are the clothing standards for performances?
A semi-formal "black and white" attire is the normative unless otherwise directed based on event.
You can also read pages 16-17 in the Heartland School Handbook for greater detail.
Are there other rental options for band instruments?
The preferred rental (and purchase) info is on the Band page. Occasionally there are class owned instruments that students might be able to use. Any questions can be discussed at the mandatory parent meeting for parents of band students at the beginning of the school year.
How does my child choose an instrument?
The majority of students try a woodwind instrument in the spring semester of their 4th grade year where Ms. Probst lets them come play and learn about the options available. Then when band is required for their 5th grade year, it's a little easier for them to commit to an instrument. Some students may have other personal instruments they've been playing prior to 5th grade and these can also be arranged with Ms. Probst.
What about music for younger grades?
General music class is offered for children in grades Kindergarten - 4th grade. Any info about what they learn as basics here?
Are private music lessons available through Heartland?
Heartland has a few staff members who offer the following lessons on site:
What does art instruction look like?
Missy Adams leads art class for the school and each learning center takes weekly turns to have an opportunity to study how to worship God through visual creativity. There are also volunteers who come help alongside her when the students participate in convention competition in these related catergories.
